The Navy needs technology to protect the surfaces of aircraft carrier flight decks from intense heat from aircraft engines.  Under a Phase I SBIR contract for the Office of Naval Research (ONR), we developed an Active Heat Spreader (AHS) to meet Navy needs.  Our AHS removes high heat fluxes and uses the removed energy to generate power.  Our AHS uses the generated power to enhance the performance of our AHS and make our AHS more durable and reliable and less expensive than competing heat spreaders.  Figure 1 shows the modular configuration of the evaporator of our AHS, and Figures 2 and 3 show an evaporator module we built in Phase I.  Each evaporator module of our AHS is a monolithic pocketed structure that is produced using High-Speed Machining (HSM).  In Phase II, we will design, build, and demonstrate the ability of our AHS to remove concentrated energy from high-speed impinging jets.  In Phase III, we will: develop an AHS suitable for a real deck environment; and market our AHS for many applications in the government and private sector.
